Off Center with Paul Schmelzer

Paul Schmelzer, managing editor of the Walker magazine, does the Off Center blog for the Walker as well. He invites you to visit the latest project—a top ten list with a difference—or rather, a bunch of top ten lists with some major differences!

The Walker Art Center’s two-year-old blog Off Center, one of six we run, just ran an experiment: we asked bloggers, artists, and critics to help us create at Top 10 post for the best art and culture of 2006.

The results were amazing, from photographer Alec Soth’s pick of best photo of the year to Film/Video assistant Joe Beres’ top picks of grungecore and rock concerts of the year to a list by Seattle blogger Rex Sorgatz (, who pines for his birth city while reflecting on his sighting of Garrison Keillor at a local strip club.

Here’s what we included:
Top Ten Concerts of 2006 by Walker Film/Video assistant Joe Beres
Ten Best Dance Performances of 2006 by choreographer and James Sewell Ballet dancer Penelope Freeh

Best of Everything by painter Frank Gaard

Top Ten Art Blogs by Modern Art Notes Tyler Green

Best World Music Releases of 2006 by Walker publicist Rachel Joyce
15 Things I Didn’t Realize I’d Miss About Minneapolis (With Only One Slander of Garrison Keillor) by Fimoculous Rex Sorgatz

A Relatively Random List of Things Recalled by Paul Schmelzer
The Five Best Books by Paul Schumacher, book buyer for the Walker Shop

Ten Best DVDs of 2006 by blogger and Walker Film/Video intern Kathie Smith

Best of Art and Culture by Alec Soth, photographer

We plan to repeat this effort again next year and expand it to include more curators, artists, and guest writers.
