Kat Purcell is a white (irish famine diaspora) nonbinary trans performer, lighting designer, experimental producer, installation artist and theatrical director, and Artistic Co-Director of Lightning Rod. They have performed and worked in London, New York, Paris, Stockholm and Minneapolis. Highlights include (MPLS) Catalyst Arts, Intermedia Arts, Patrick’s Cabaret, Guthrie Theater, Queertopia, Pangea World Theater, New Native Theater, Red Eye Theater, Kudeta Dance, Pillsbury House + Theatre, 20% Theatre Company, (NYC) Target Margin Theater, HERE Arts Center, Baryshnikov Arts Center, MoMA PS1, Incubator Arts f.k.a. Ontological-Hysteric (Paris) Fondation des Etats-Unis, and (London) Oubliette Arthouse. Kat graduated from the London International School of Performing Arts in 2009. They have been a participant of Pangea World Theater & Art2Action’s National Institute of Directing & Ensemble Creation since 2017. They are a founding member of the MN Artist Coalition. Kat is also a street activist and facilitator of community-driven cultural events, with a focus on prison/police/border abolition and fighting for the bodily autonomy of queer and women folk. They are the founder and coordinator for Studio he(ART)h Project, a warming station & art studio for unhoused people, one of the many founders of Free University NYC, have worked with Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee and MN Freedom Fund.
