North House Folk School is a unique educational nonprofit committed to enriching lives and building community through the teaching of traditional northern crafts in a student-centered learning environment that inspires the hands, the heart and the mind
Program Overview:
The intern program has had four participants for a number of years, and we are considering adding a fifth position to the program in the near future. The program will run from January 15, 2025 to November 23, 2025; a duration of 10 months. Seven vacation days available depending on the program schedule. Four days of professional development or field time are available. The internship program offers:
- $725/month paid living stipend.
- $3500 course credit for tuition/materials for selected courses taken as a student
- Up to $500 for capstone project expenses
- Housing in downtown Grand Marais, across the street from the harbor-side campus with other interns (shared living space, private bedrooms). Includes utilities and internet.
- Development of traditional craft skills, teaching experience, public engagement and nonprofit administrative skills. Connection to an extensive community of educators and craftspeople.
It is North House’s goal to support internship participants in their discovery and exploration of the worlds of craft and folk education, setting the stage for their continued professional development as artisans, educators, and non-profit administrators into the future.
Ideal Qualifications:
- Exposure to and experience with traditional craft in one or more of the North House thematic areas (woodworking, fiber arts, foods, basketry, boat building, blacksmithing, etc.)
- Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational and computer skills
- Proven success managing independent projects
- Confidence developing working relationships with instructors, volunteers and co-interns.
- Experience teaching or engaging public audiences
- Ability to be highly flexible, energetic, timely, self-motivated, and have a good sense of humor
- Exceptional work ethic with availability to work full time and with odd schedules (two days off per week, not always consecutively, some evenings)
- Willingness to live on the busy campus in a five-bedroom intern apartment and be immersed in the rhythm of campus life
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License is preferred
*Note: As North House is unable to sponsor visas, all applicants must already have the legal ability to reside in the United States for the duration of the program.
