Minnesota Hockey Recreation League Open Call for Art
Minnesota Hockey Recreation League
The Minnesota Hockey Recreation League is seeking submissions for the creative interpretation of our league logo.
Who We Are:
The Minnesota Hockey Recreation League (“Rec League”) is entering its 16th season of offering a low cost, low commitment hockey alternative in the greater Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area.
The Rec League features a unique approach to hockey. We focus on teaching basic hockey skills and sportsmanship in a no body checking, low pressure environment that fosters a love of hockey.
In addition to a shorter season, which provides players the opportunity to pursue other activities, teams are formed on the basis of geographical area and competitive balance with the goal of maximizing each player’s experience and limiting travel.
The Rec League offers five levels of play: 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U. The season concludes with an end of the year festival in late March.
Minnesota Hockey Recreation League is an affiliate of USA Hockey and Minnesota Hockey.
More information can be found on our website.
What are we looking for?
“L’Étoile du Nord – The Star of the North”
We are seeking submissions to creatively interpret our logo as a part of an overall design that will be printed on our t-shirts. The Minnesota Hockey Recreation League gives away approximately 750 t-shirts every year to our athletes and families at the season ending festival in March.
The theme for the design for this year is “The North Star State”.
The designs are open to any creative interpretation, but must include the Minnesota Hockey Recreation League logo and incorporate the theme as a part of the overall design.
Jury
Guest Juror – Jayson Randall
Jury will be made up of select members of the Minnesota Hockey Recreation League Board of Directors, led by artist Jayson Randall.
Jayson Randall is an award-winning experimental artist and filmmaker who currently resides in Minnesota.
Through Jayson Randall’s interplay of light and shadow he illustrates the relationship between useful and forgotten. Like beacons in the dark, his work expresses how discarded items and obscure places reveal a hidden narrative of when their hard work was integral to the function of humanity; now their service is no longer required.
Jayson designs and builds complex works of art that fuse technology with illusion. Whether creating interactive sculptures or producing innovative films his work bridges the gap between art and science.
More information can be found on Jayson’s website.
Judging Criteria:
Designs will be evaluated for eligibility requirements, overall creative artistic design, adherence to the theme, inclusion of the Rec League logo into the design, and feasibility for the design to be printed on a t-shirt.
What does the selected artist receive?
The selected winning design will be printed on approximately 750 t-shirts which are given out for free to our athletes and families at our season ending annual festival in March.
As a part of community outreach we offer an opportunity for the selected artist to interact with the athletes and families at the annual festival.
Specific method of outreach is up to the artist, but may include a public talk or a booth at the festival where the artist can engage with the athletes and families about their design. Public outreach will be promoted by Minnesota Hockey Recreation league.
The selected design will be featured on the Minnesota Hockey Recreation League website.
Artist and selected design will be promoted in direct emails to our league members.
Artist will also receive 10 t-shirts for their personal usage.
Winning design may also be featured on our Youtube channel, social media posts, printed flyers, press releases, posters and other media platforms as needed for promotion of the Minnesota Hockey Recreation League and the selected design.
